We took a sailing boat over to Kim Bo, which is a quiet village, where you are free to walk about watching the people of Kim Bo working hard carving beautiful sculptures, ornaments, furniture and souvenirs from wood.
The boat we took with a rooftop viewing deck |
It is a family business where men do the main carving while women prepare the wood or add the finishing touches to it.
A chain of workers; the person on the far left is the artist drawing the artwork then the middle guy carves it out, while the lady places the 'filling' and finishing touches to it |
We were told all the boats in Hoi An were made in this village and as we walked we saw numerous boats at different stages of construction. It takes 2 weeks for a 25 foot boat to be made and all boats have 2 eyes painted on the front so as to keep the sea ghosts away…!
A boat like this takes 2 weeks, with the painted eyes on it |
A local man hard at work. The detail on this statue of an asian man sitting down, is so intricate, they really are very talented |
Jay on the boat heading home |
